Data Backup and Restore

How To Backup and Restore your Data

Updated over a week ago

How automatic daily backup works

Enter your email address in the TripLog mobile app (TripLog > Menu > Account) to ensure your backup is identifiable/recoverable.

You can set up automatic daily backup in TripLog > Menu > Data Sync and Backup > enable ‘Automatic Daily Backup’. The data will be backed up to the device and uploaded to our cloud storage. Select the ‘Cloud Location’ nearest to your home address.

The daily backup occurs the first time you open TripLog each day. The backup will include the data up to the backup timestamp.

Note: If your company uses the PII/PHI encryption, the files in your backup will not be readable if unzipped and examined. It is not recommended to inspect the contents of the backup unless you are comfortable with how to view these files.

Manually Creating a Backup

Open the TripLog App > Main Menu ( ≡ three line icon ) > Your Plan (Click on the Email) > Data Backup > Data Backup Section > Back up Data

Backup and Email: This will create a TripLogBackup.zip file that can be opened in a local app(share menu) to be emailed for later retrieval. This option can be used for getting a new device or if you no longer have subscription access.

Backup to Device: This creates a local backup that the device can see and will attempt to upload to the cloud when the next backup is created. Depending on your device, you may not be able to access the stored backup area. This option is useful if you intend to do many edits and want a "checkpoint" to be able to return to if there is a mistake.

Most Common Option: Backup to Cloud: This will create a backup on the device and upload it to the cloud under the account email.

Manually Restoring from a Backup

Open the TripLog App > Main Menu ( ≡ three line icon ) > Your Plan (Click on the Email) > Data Backup > Data Restore Section > Restore Data

Restore From Device: This option allows you to choose a designated backup file stored in local memory. The process is slightly different based on your device type and age. Follow the onscreen instructions to copy the backup to it. (This is generally the process for restoring from a backup you emailed to yourself)

Restore From Cloud: This option will automatically restore your data using the most recent backup in the cloud. Generally, only do this option if you are aware of the last time you created a backup to the cloud. This would be good for restoring a recently replaced device.

Restore from Historic Data: This option will allow you to search by your email to find cloud backups that will let you choose which backup to restore. By default, it will show you the last 10 device backups, and after searching will allow you to expand and show the Cloud Backups. Select the backup that you would like to use for restoring data.

Important Note: Restoring a backup will remove all data currently on the device and load the data from the backup as is. Please ensure that you have synced your current data to the web or create a new backup in case there is an issue.

Replacing your Mobile Device

IMPORTANT! Before you replace your iOS device, BACK UP the data through the TripLog app. iCloud backups are not sufficient. A proper backup will ensure your data can be restored correctly.

To backup and restore data, open TripLog app > Menu > Account > Data backup > Sync and Edit Data on Web > Choose the backup and restore options.

On your OLD device:

  1. Open TripLog app > Menu > Account (Note existing email address OR enter your email address if the field is blank). Then tap Back.

  2. Tap Menu > Account > Data backup > Cloud Location > Choose nearest cloud location to your home address

  3. Tap Backup Data > To Cloud

On your NEW device:

  1. Open TripLog app > Menu > Account (Enter same email address from OLD device), Then tap Back.

  2. Tap Menu > Account > Data backup > Cloud Location > Choose same Cloud Location from OLD device

  3. Tap Menu > Account > Data Restore > Restore Data > From Cloud

Restore Lost Data

If you accidentally deleted the app or lost access to the device, the data is gone. However, your data is actively backed up by TripLog.

Restore procedure will remove/replace any existing data/settings in the TripLog mobile app.

There are three options to recover data:

  1. If you’ve registered or backed up to the cloud, it’s the easiest way to recover.Follow new device steps under “Replacing iPhone/iPad” section above. If it says cannot find your data, try a different cloud location and/or email address that may have been used previously.

  2. If you’ve backed up and emailed the backup file to yourself, you can copy the TripLogBackup.zip file from computer to iOS device through iTunes .Open TripLog app > Menu > Account > Data backup > Restore from Device.

  3. If you haven’t completed any backup, unfortunately, your data is gone with the old device.

How to copy files between iOS and computer

You need a USB cable to connect your phone to a computer, and follow the instructions herehttp://support.apple.com/kb/ht4094 .

How to copy files between Android and computer

Connect your device to your PC via a USB cable. In My Computer, under the “Internal Storage (or Phone)” of the device, find the folder “TripLog”, then find or create a “backup” folder, and copy the TripLogBackup.zip to that folder. Then go to TripLog > menu > Data > Restore from Device.

I have an Amazon cloud and/or a Dropbox account, why do I have to pay for the Cloud Storage from your app?

This app uses a Amazon S3 Cloud Storage business account to store all user files. It is different from personal Amazon accounts. The benefits of Amazon S3 are:

  1. Anonymous file sharing without explicit user logins. Your receipt photos are uploaded to the Amazon cloud and the links are available in the HTML reports. They are available to anyone whom you send the reports to. However, the long, unique and unpredictable URLs prevent people from guessing the links of your photos, which makes them very secure.

  2. Amazon S3 data centers are all over the world. TripLog chooses five (5) locations in Oregon USA, Virginia USA, Ireland, Singapore, and Australia. They serve local users of each zone. To see and verify the location that you are using, please go to TripLog > menu > Settings > Cloud Storage Location.

  3. The Amazon Cloud storage purchase also covers the customer support for any kind of data backup and restore issues. Having a central place for all backup files allows us to have easy access to them and provide excellent support when you need it.
